UK Corporate Games Stoke and Staffordshire Officially Launched

The Launch of the UK Corporate Games Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire was staged last night at the impressive Keele Hall at Keele University.  The Lord Mayor of Stoke On Trent, senior civic representatives, VIP’s, sporting ambassadors and business people from a host of organisations travelled from near and far to attend the enjoyable evening in beautiful surroundings.

Guests heard that the UK Corporate Games,  will take place from 21 to 24 June 2018 and that it is expected to attract thousands of amateur athletes from a range of UK companies of all types, boosting the local economy while showcasing the area’s growing economic opportunities.  As a result, businesses in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent are set to benefit, as Europe’s largest multisport festival for business returns to the region for a second time.

This year’s Games was held in Nottingham in July and it attracted over 5,000 people generating an estimated £3.8m for the local economy (click here to the see coverage in the Notts Post).

The Games next year will feature 23 sports on the packed weekend programme, as well as a host of celebrations including a Grand Parade of Athletes, the Great Games Party and the SuperCentre Celebration.

Sports will include badminton, netball, football, go Karting, golf, volleyball, cricket, hockey, tennis, basketball, running and dragon boat racing. Venues include Keele and Staffordshire Universities, Fenton Manor Sports Centre, Newcastle College and Trentham Gardens and a host of other selected venues.

The joint Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent approach was selected by the Games organisers ahead of several other bids following the success of the Games staged in the area in 2015.

Mark Ormerod, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Provost of Keele University, welcomed people to Keele Hall and stressed how proud the University was to be involved in the partnership group supporting the Games.  Mark kindly introduced Louisa Preston of BBC London News who was the guest MC for the evening.  Stoke, Staffordshire and Newcastle Coucillors and executives were in attendance and they all threw their collective weight behind the event.

Helen Riley, Deputy Chief Executive at Staffordshire County Council said: “The Games will give thousands of people from top UK companies the chance to visit and see the huge economic opportunities available in the area.  We would encourage local businesses to sign up to participate so that they can all take advantage of the benefits on offer”.

Sharon Taaffe, Assistant Director of Health Improvement at Stoke On Trent City Council echoed Helen’s words and also confirmed that there is a determination to see the local community heavily involved in the Games so that everyone enjoys the festival.

Games Director for the UK Corporate Games, Ben Sedgemore said: The Games has been staged annually in the UK since 1992 but our experience in 2015 in the region was certainly one of the best.  Stoke-On-Trent and Staffordshire is blessed with some fantastic facilities and a great central location and everyone enjoyed their involvement in the Games.  We had some great interest from other strong destinations for 2018 but the positive experience enjoyed by the competing organisations and ourselves last time ensured we were very keen to return.  We can’t wait now.

Another terrific supporter in attendance was England Legend Gordon Banks OBE who is The Games Patron.  Gordon was willing to have photos taken with representatives from all of the companies and institutions in attendance.  Gordon said, “The Corporate Games will attract thousands of amateur sportsmen and women from the UK’s biggest companies to Stoke-on-Trent,  Newcastle-under-Lyme and Staffordshire over the next 18 months. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase not only the region’s economic opportunities but also our fantastic sporting facilities.

“We can be truly proud of venues like Newcastle College, Keele and Staffordshire Universities, Fenton Manor and Trentham Gardens. I would encourage business of all size and kind to get behind these events and make the most of the tremendous opportunities that they will create.  I know you will all enjoy them too!”

In addition to the positive vibes from the politicians and dignitaries the Games is already proving to be popular with organisations from across the UK.

Asia Pacific Corporate Games in Tokyo Set To Be Huge And Opportunity is Everywhere

With the Worldwide Corporate Sport Community growing all of the time it is no wonder that larger and larger Games are being staged in great destinations around the world.  The Team in Tokyo look set to be on track for a massive Games again this year after really successful events in 2016 and 2015.  The great news is that members of the Worldwide Corporate Sport Community from around the World can take advantage of sponsored entry fees into the Asia Pacific Corporate Games if they travel to Tokyo for this exciting event.  The Team in Tokyo are keen to showcase this impressive City and the powerful Games to visitors from any destination.

However, it could be that November sees the largest number of entrants of any month this year with 7000 predicted in Tokyo, around 10,000 entrants possible in Melbourne Australia in addition to the potentially huge World Corporate Games in Houston, Texas, USA sandwiched in between. Abu Dhabi could be another great destination for you if you want the warmth of the Middle East.

Sheriff of Nottingham Welcomes the UK Corporate Games 2017 at the Official Launch

The Sheriff of Nottingham welcomed the UK Corporate Games to the City of Nottingham in front of a packed crowd at the Official Launch.

Cllr Jackie Morris said “Nottingham is a proud and historic city with wonderful facilities, a growing business community and a vibrant nightlife and we are thrilled that Nottingham has been awarded the rights to stage the UK Corporate Games next year.” The Sheriff clearly recognised the major opportunities that the Games will create for the City and for every one of the businesses involved. Cllr Morris mingled with the business guests and Civic dignitaries from the City of Stoke on Trent who hosted the Games in 2015.

The MC for the evening was Louisa Preston of BBC London News who herself, was a graduate from Nottingham and many visitors had travelled from far and wide to attend the event. Ben Sedgemore, the Games Director, gave a presentation on the Games and spoke in glowing terms of the quality of facilities that he had been able to choose from in the region, “we have been fortunate to stage the Games in some wonderful Cities around the world but rarely have we seen an array of sporting facilities of the quality and number that Nottingham possesses. We know that all of the participants will be blown away by what they find in Nottingham and we are all aiming to make this the best UK Corporate Games in its 20 year history”.  The presentation described the 23 sports and host of celebrations that make up Europe’s largest multisport festival for businesses.  Mr Sedgemore proclaimed that the Games delivers genuine opportunity for everyone involved, stating that there is something for everyone to enjoy in the Games, whether you are old or young and regardless of how fit or sporty you are.  The Games is totally inclusive and open to everyone.

Other speakers on the night included Kate Lockhart representing the Games Official Charity, the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre.  Kate recounted how happy they are that they have been selected as the Official Charity for the Games.  Andrew May, General Manager at Nottingham Conferences explained that they are keen to see the outstanding facilities at the University fully utilised by the students but also community and business groups as they can all benefit from the massive investment that has taken place.

The final message was delivered by Stuart Mather, Community Relations & Employee Engagement Manager at Capital One.  Capital One entered a team of 40 into the Corporate Games in Liverpool this year but they can’t wait to participate in the Games on “Home Soil” in Nottingham from the 6th-9th July.  Stuart said “We had a fabulous experience in the Games this year.  The Games is wonderful for team building and it was professionally administered but really fun to be involved in too with the mixture of sport and celebrations.  We are looking to enter between 100 and 200 entrants this year and we would have no hesitation in recommending the Games to all businesses”.

Visitors also had a chance to tour the impressive new facility which will house the Games SuperCentre and almost all of the indoor sports on the packed Games programme.

World Corporate Games Makes Flying Start

The World Corporate Games Headquarters is delighted to confirm that the World Corporate Games Liverpool 2014 , presented by the International Festival for Business, is already on track to be one of the biggest Corporate Games of the decade.

After great Games experiences for thousands of organisations around the globe, the Flagship Games for 2014 is set to be a huge success, creating unrivalled opportunities for everyone involved.

Peel Holdings has joined CSC as Headline sponsors and this will be their first ever Corporate Games .  Peel will be staging the dragonboat racing and open water swimming at their impressive Princes Dock and this site looks set to be a real focal point of Games activity over the weekend.  The Peel Group are heavily involved in business and they are continuing to invest in major developments across the UK. Peel is looking to field a team in excess of 200 participants and the rumour is that they may be very competitive!

Places for People from Preston has also taken a package for the 3rd consecutive year.  This team was planning to feature just over 100 entrants entrants again this year but after overwhelming interest from throughout their group they have decided to enter over 250 participants which is great news for all concerned.  They will all be competing keenly for points, medals and awards in Liverpool in June.

Over 1000 Athletes from all over South Africa proudly participated in the Cape Town Corporate Games 2012

Over 1,000 athletes from all over South Africa celebrated the arrival of the Cape Town Corporate Games and proudly participated in multiple sport disciplines on 14-17 June 2012.

The multi sports festival weekend featured over 13 sports at destinations across Cape Town, including University of Cape Town, Montague Arena, V & A Waterfront, Kenilworth Karting, Mowbray Bowling Club, Stadium on Main and Rondebosch Golf Club. Over 87 sporting events took place and more than 800 prestigious medals were handed out.

Organisations such as Tsogo Sun Hotels, Sanlam, City of Cape Town, SAB Miller, Spur Corporation, Barloworld, Cape Union Mart and Pep, brought teams of their staff from all over South Africa. Some of the larger organisations brought over 200 from their ranks to compete in almost every sport.

Across the weekend of Cape Town Corporate Games 14-17 June 2012, competitors enjoyed the camaraderie of sporting competition. Everyday Athletes played amongst colleagues, friends, clients and the local community in a multi-sport festival of corporate competition, fitness and fun.

Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille commented:

“We also value, in fact more than anything else, people coming together to create the kind of community spirit that they want as a part of their daily lives. And the Corporate Games provides that level of community, through sport and healthy competition, that people need most in their lives.

Corporate Games which is recognised as the World’s largest corporate multisport festival, benefits everyone that gets involved and there really is no better way to showcase what a region has to offer to the sporting business world.

The welcome Corporate Games received in Cape Town has been terrific. The Organisers are assured that people will be returning to their offices today with weary limbs yet big smiles and great memories. The standard of facilities has been exemplary, our local event coordinators were great ambassadors for their respective sports and it truly was an unforgettable weekend.

Nearly 600 first, second and third place medals were awarded to Games Winners across the weekend and spectators cheered them on as they stepped onto the podiums to receive their accolades.

Some of the largest businesses in the country entered into the Games, including City of Cape Town, Sanlam, SAB Miller, Barloworld Motor, BAT, Spur and our Official Hotel Partner Tsogo Sun, Southern Sun Waterfront Hotel.

 

Kilowatt AV were the fastest on the twisty racetrack in Karting and speeded into first place in the Mens Open.TSOGO Sun Hotels walked away with the Sport Championship Award for Action Cricket. The hospitality Athletes also raced for the finish line and were well ahead of the other Athletes taking the first place in the Women Open 5km Race.

Meanwhile, the Mens Open Soccer 11’s saw the City of Cape Town storm to victory as they battled for first place against Airports Company South Africa. The two teams were closely matched and the game went into a penalty shootout, before the City of Cape Town scored the winning goal. The Capetonians representing the City proudly took the Sport Championship Award for Soccer 11’s. 

Turkish Airlines came away with second place and JAG Foundation in third for the Dragon Boat racing. Spur who were also the Silver Sponsors for Cape Town Corporate Games 2012 rowed away as overall winners and also claiming the Sport Championship Award for Dragon Boat racing.

Among other sports, Sanlam finished in first place coming through a tunnel formed by the England Under 20’s Rugby Team who were practicing on the fields of UCT and won the Mix Open Relay. Sanlam also won the Sport Championship Award for Badminton, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Netball. Running, Soccer 5’s, Squash, Table Tennis and Tenpin Bowling.

Human Resource Manager at Sanlam, Frederick Stroebel commented:

“Sanlam is proud to be part of the first Corporate Games to be hosted in South Africa. It was a truly magnificent weekend with brutal competition and friendly camaraderie on and off the field.
