World Corporate Cup of Dragon Boat Racing Enjoyed by Everyone

Trentham Gardens was the idyllic destination for the World Corporate Cup of Dragonboat Racing this weekend (16th September 2017).  After fabulous World Corporate Cup experiences in Triathlon in recent weeks and in Soccer for more than a decade, this time the competition was on the water, following the success of the Europe Corporate Cup at the same destination in 2016!

Crews from across the region and from throughout the UK pitched their gazebos and paddled their hearts out in this event for businesses and organisations of all kinds.

The SuperCentre Celebration registration took place at Cadwaladers Cafe, with many competitors taking the opportunity to sample the warm drinks on offer to counteract the early morning September chill.  All competitors received a Games T-shirt, a souvenir programme, their ID badge as well as a decorative “Weekend Sports Warrior” coaster from Games sponsors Wade Ceramics.

Vibrant SuperCentre at Cadwaladers

Once registered they entered the Gardens and admired the beautiful surroundings before undertaking their racing and safety briefings and getting their buoyancy aids and paddles.

As the racing commenced there were some competitive battles taking place with every encounter.  Each crew would battle it out in 3 x 333m heats to post their fastest time across the 1000m challenge!  However, there were a few showpiece encounters spicing up the proceedings with Stoke-On-Trent City Council and Newcastle Borough Council locking horns as well as Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire Police respectively.

Previous entrants Mitten Clarke were looking fluid in their white strips and the pale blue shirts of Wade Ceramics were looking good too.  Both of these crews were improving with every race.

The Walton Centre, Mellors Catering services and Stoke fit looked to be having heaps of fun and there were some incredibly close races across the day.

The Lord and Lady Mayoress had dropped by to support the event which was really appreciated by everyone in attendance and the Chief Executive of the Games Official Charity, David Webster of the Dougie Mac Hospice was also supporting the Cup.

David Webster is seen here presenting one of the impressive hand crafted, Wade Ceramics World Corporate Cup Awards, to the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Stoke-On-Trent, in recognition of the City’s support for the Cup as part of the City of Sport Legacy programme.

After some exhilarating racing for everyone involved we moved to establish the top 8 positions with 3 spectacular finals. Some of the races were so close that we needed a photo finish to separate the teams.

The Grand Final was all set up to be a closely contested encounter with the experienced Nottinghamshire Police crew taking on the youthful apprentices from Goodwin PLC and Phil Fortunes fit band of friends from Staffordshire Police.

The Grand final did not disappoint, with all three of the finalists competing for the medals and each of the crews posting their fastest times from the whole day!

The Top 10 placings were as follows but everyone had a wonderful experience.

In the Worldwide Corporate Sport Community we firmly believe that everyone who takes part is a winner and the spirit from the competitors in this event was a joy to behold.

Local Paralympic Medalists, Ian Marsden and Jenny Booth were on hand to present the worthy winners and runners up with their medals. The winners of the World Corporate Cup of Dragonboat Racing  2017 are Nottinghamshire Police, with Goodwin PLC a creditable 2nd and Staffordshire Police proudly taking 3rd place on the podium.

The Corporate Games would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone connected with this great event at Trentham Gardens.  Thank you for your support and hope to see you all involved in the UK Corporate Games Stoke On Trent and Staffordshire 2018 in June.

UK Corporate Games Nottingham 2017 Hailed as a Resounding Success

Organisers, Partners, Sponsors, Participants and helpers have all hailed the positive impact of the UK Corporate Games 2017.

More than £3.8m was generated for Nottinghamshire’s economy by the UK Corporate Games, it is estimated.

Nottingham hosted Europe’s largest annual multi-sport festival for businesses from July 6 to 9, with more than 5,000 people taking part in 23 activities at venues around the city, including the University of Nottingham, Colwick Park and Wollaton Hall.

Intel, IBM, Ernst & Young, Lloyds Banking Group, Vodafone, Boots, Speedo, Willmott Dixon, Asda and Capital One were among the companies represented.

Games Director Ben Sedgemore said: “The Games has been a resounding success and we could not have asked for more – even the weather was on our side.

“The facilities are excellent in Nottinghamshire, with top quality venues for all of our 23 sports and array of celebrations.

“The feedback that we have been receiving has been wonderful and it is a credit to everyone who has supported the Games.

“People have been blown away by Nottingham and we are delighted that we made the decision to bring the Games here in 2017. Thank you so much.”

Andrew May, general manager at Nottingham Conferences, the group that promotes the University of Nottingham’s conference venues, added: “This was a great opportunity to bring the city together to put Nottingham on the map, to benefit local businesses and for us to showcase our £40m David Ross Sports Village, the latest addition to an already stellar collection of state-of-the-art sporting facilities available here at the university.

“The atmosphere on campus was outstanding and this event will live long in the memory.”

Employees at organisations, companies, corporations and institutions all battled it out for points, medals and company pride.

The winners came from all across the country and local teams also won a number of the medals.

Vodafone won the Sport for Life Grand award and the medallist award, while Nottinghamshire Police was the top local performer, finishing second in the overall medal table with 48 medals.

Inspector Paul Harris said “I cannot describe how impressed we all were with the Games this weekend.

“My whole organisation is buzzing, and I’m seeing competitors and medallists alike acknowledging each other and ‘high fiving’ on corridors where previously they would have passed in silence, so I’m not overstating the positive effect this event has had.

“Sports sections have been reinvigorated, friendships and bonds have been rediscovered, and I’ve even seen pictures of medallists up in the office to welcome them back.”

A team from Nottingham Forest won the 11-a-side football tournament and Boots also secured medals in a number of sports to finish 21st in the medal table from 123 organisations that were represented.

The University of Nottingham’s multisport complex was the epicentre of the Games, providing many of the facilities for the 23 sports.

This includes its new £40m David Ross Sports Village, which houses a huge multi-court sports hall, seven glass squash courts and an international standard table tennis hall.

PNE FC Score As Silver Champions for UK Games in July

pne logo

Preston North End Football Club have transferred from the Championship to the UK Corporate Games!

The club are the latest addition to our ever-growing group of Preston Champions – true supporters of the Preston Games.  As Silver Champions, the club will be putting their sporting prowess to good use and will be entering over 50 athletes across the 4-day, 22 sport festival.  In addition to this, the club will have access to all the major events and celebrations across the weekend, to promote PNE and the City to local and visiting corporates.

Club History

In the past Preston were famously successful, being the first winners of The Double in English football. In 1888 – 89, Preston became the only team to go throughout an entire season unbeaten in both the league and FA Cup – also with the record of never conceding a goal in the FA Cup.

Without a doubt, Preston’s greatest player is arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time and a local lad Sir Tom Finney.  Finney is regarded as one of the best of his era and scored 30 international goals in his time.  Dubbed the "Preston Plumber" due to Finney actually being a plumber, he remained Preston’s most recent full England international until David Nugent who scored on his only international appearance against Andorra.

Bobby Charlton, an England World Cup winner from 1966, was also appointed Preston manager in 1973.

The club stadium is located in Deepdale and was first built in 1860, although it has undergone several redevelopments, growth and regeneration since then.  It is claimed to be the longest continuously used football ground in the world, with 135 years of games history on its well-used pitch.  The stadium itself holds 23,408 – and it is a fantastic venue.

Seems like a stroke of good luck?  Well you’d be wrong…

Preston City Council

Preston City Council are Host City Partners for the 19th UK Corporate Games and are responsible for bringing all of these fantastic events together in 2012.

They fought off competition to secure this event in the City for what is arguably the biggest of all celebrations to take place in Lancashire.

The City Council, who are also responsible for Preston’s European City of Sport 2012 recognition, as well as programming the Guild Year celebrations, are very excited about Europe’s largest multisports festival arriving in Preston this July.  And it comes as no surprise that there is a lot in common between Preston and London when it comes to Games preparations, with the capital hosting the Olympics less than one month after the Games.

Preston Guild is already making connections with the Olympics on a number of levels to ensure that we capitalise wherever possible on the opportunities presented by being the host country for this truly global event. The eyes of the world will be on England so it’s a fantastic time to showcase all that Preston and Lancashire have to offer.

Regionally, the Games represents significant benefits for the rest of Lancashire.  The Games will attract thousands of visitors into the city for 4 days of sport, business networking and the opportunity to explore Lancashire to its fullest.

Lancashire has an excellent opportunity to attract international visitors into the UK for the Olympics, but also for everyday athletes from all over the UK to travel north and explore Lancashire heritage, landscapes, people and places – with Preston at the centre of it all!

2012: Once Every 20 Years….The Games Celebrates the Preston Guild

guild

For those of you who have often wondered, particularly those from outside Lancashire, this should tell you everything you need to know about the history and traditions of Preston Guild – England’s oldest festival in England’s youngest city!

What is Preston Guild? Why is it so special? Why would you be mad to miss it?

Preston Guild is a historic celebration dating back to 1179. It is the only Guild still celebrated in the UK and as such is a unique celebration of our country’s heritage.

The 2012 celebration will be the first Guild in the 21st century and the first since the granting of Preston’s City status in 2002. Held only once every twenty years, the Guild plays an important role in the development of Preston as a thriving and important Lancashire city. The changing times mean that each Guild has its own identity but shares a heritage of over 800 years.

Residents and visitors, artists and businesses, athletes and performers – everyone gets involved in Preston Guild. The Guild has a long history and has evolved over the centuries, but one thing that has always remained the central focus of the Guild is people – the people who plan it, participate in it, promote it and the people who tell their stories of the Guild to children and grandchildren.

Your City, Your Guild – Your Opportunity!

Preston Guild 2012 offers businesses a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to make their mark on history. In 2012 the Guild will capture the attention of a national and international audience, with Preston inviting everyone ‘all back to ours’ after the Olympics. What better way to showcase talent and business excellence in the North West of England, along with the rich cultural and heritage offer of the region?

Preston City Council is committed to supporting the Guild celebrations, as are many other public sector organisations. We are however also seeking the involvement from other local, regional and national partners to make this great event the success we envisage.

The UK Corporate Games Preston 2012 only adds to what is already shaping up to be a fantastic Guild year.  Visit the Guild Calendar to keep up to date with key events for 2012…and to get the Games in your calendars!

Preston – European City of Sport 2012

For those of you that have read about it – here’s some more information on what it actually means to be a ‘European City of Sport’ and how Preston will be celebrating its recognition as an Active City as part of the global sporting community.

What is the European City of Sport?

“Sport, like music, is something universal, something that is understood all around the world, regardless of social, ethnic or religious differences. Not only sport is universal, but also its values”

Dr. Jacques Rogge, IOC President

The Objective of the European Capital of Sports Award is an ethical commitment conscious of the social function that sport has as linking factor between the physical wellbeing of individuals, the general improvement in their quality of life and the harmonious integration of society.

The allocation of this prestigious recognition is led by the European organisation ACES, who encourage sport as a factor of a cohesive society, improvement in the quality of life, psycho-physical well-being and complete integration within social classes and hard to reach groups. ACES works with the European Commission and above all on the initiatives presented in the “White Paper of Sport”.

Sport will have a strong focus on the Guild programme particularly at community level where local clubs and organisations are busy planning. We expect to have over 100 sporting events large and small during 2012 including the hugely-anticipated UK Corporate Games which will see thousands of everyday athletes arrive to the City of Preston to compete in 22 sports over 4 days.

Why was Preston awarded European City of Sport 2012?

Following their application Preston City Council and its key partners, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), NHS Central Lancashire, the School Sport Partnership, Preston Sports Forum and Preston College hosted a two day visit by ACES assessors. The opportunity was taken to showcase a broad range of work and demonstrate the impact of sport and physical activity showing connectivity to the city’s aspirations in 2012 for both an Olympic and a Preston Guild legacy. Assessors were undoubtedly impressed by the merits of the application through meeting proactive and supportive partners,
visiting facilities and feeling the passion that exists for sport at a grassroots level in the city.

What benefits will it bring for Preston?

European City of Sport designation and its connection with Preston Guild will enable a wealth of activity to take place in 2012 encouraging greater participation and ultimately a more healthy population leaving a lasting legacy.

The aim is to create or brand at least 100 facilities, events and activities under the European City of Sport brand aligned with the People’s Guild and Preston’s World Health Organisation (WHO) Healthy City designation. Schools, clubs and communities will rise to this challenge and be supported by branding material to recognise the combined prestige of these three brands which will work in synergy across the course of the year.

European City of Sport is led by four Principal Partners: Preston City Council, UCLan, Preston College and NHS Central Lancashire. They are supported by Preston North End FC as an official partner and by sportswear manufacturer Surridge as official kit supplier.
