Be Prepared for Wet Weather…Get a Gazebo!

British Summertime is upon us so it’s anyone’s guess what the weather will bring across the Games weekend!  Recent flash flooding experienced throughout the UK as a result of torrential rain caused havoc up and down the country – and the forecast continues to be dubious at best.  Sadly, guaranteeing sunshine isn’t within the control of the Games office!  The Royals could not arrange it for the Jubilee and unfortunately we are in the same position despite Preston City Council’s confident reassurances and our relentless positive thinking! Therefore despite crossing our fingers and toes – we will all be at the mercy of the clouds for the Games weekend.

It pays to be prepared for rain, so here are some suggestions to help minimise disruption for you and your team mates.

Wet Weather Tips

1.  Bring a Gazebo

There’s nothing worse than being stuck on the side of the football field between matches in the pouring rain.  Several teams are opting to take wet weather cover in the form of garden Gazebos to shield them from strong sun, or more likely, wet weather.  Found in most local supermarkets and online catalogues, gazebos can be affordable and in good supply, helping to keep kit and food dry as well as your team!  Do consider bringing one along – particularly if participating in an outdoor field sports such as:Muddy Scrum

Soccer 5s
Soccer 6s
Soccer 11s
Dragon Boat
Rugby 7s
Cricket 8s

There is shelter at all of our venues but your own Gazebo will give you some extra (moveable) protection.

2.   Wet Weather Gear

Advise your teams to bring their waterproofs!  Waterproof, breathable jackets, trousers and hats that you can throw on between games to help keep dry.  Dry = Happy.

3.  Wear The Right Fabrics

Right, time to get scientific!  To help keep you dry, or at least comfortable.  Often, clothing made with polypropylene, Dri-Fit, Thinsulate or Gore-Tex fabrics will keep water and sweat away from your skin.  Select clothing containing breathable fabrics to help keep you dry and warm.  Where possible, avoid materials like cotton – once they are wet, they stay wet!  This is especially important where feet are concerned, so consider socks made of wool, merino wool and CoolMax – these can be found in most outdoor stores.

4. Layer Up

Ask any outdoor athlete and they will tell you that layering is the best way to keep warm when competing in cold weather.  It’s important to pay attention to the most important layer – the one closest to your body.  By wearing a base layer to keep water and sweat away from your skin, with a mid-layer over the top and an outer layer to wear between games.

5.  Spare Changes of Clothing & Shoes

Bring an extra pair of trainers, giving you something warm and dry to change into at the end of the day.  Double up on kit – extra tops, trousers and jackets, giving you something dry to change into for the rest of the weekend.

10 Day Weather Forecast

The Weather Channel’s 10-day Weather Forecast gives some clues on the weather as we lead up to the event.

Whatever the weather will be, we are confident our athletes will have a fantastic time and make the best come rain or shine.  Having said that….Games Office will be performing a Sun Dance every day at 9am in an effort to encourage a weekend of warm weather!

Games ‘Insidr’ Tweets UK Secrets

Ever since I started working at the UK Corporate Games back in 2003, just before the first of two consecutive UK & Ireland Corporate Games to hit Newcastle Gateshead, I noticed how different working for the Games was, simply by talking to friends and family about it.

To me, most people I know have a ‘regular’ job, whether they’re office bound or work on building sites.  When I tell them about what we ‘do’ at the Games and where it has already taken me abroad, they seem to be… mystified with it. I’m guessing it’s the variety of it all, whether we’re setting up for a launch event in the Tate Modern in London, the Royal Armouries in Leeds or more recently, at the top of the Gherkin in London, what we do sounds… great! And that’s aside from actually staging the Games or throwing parties in premier league football clubs!

The @CGUKInsidr
The @CGUKInsidr

To help shine a little light on what we do to the wider public, I’ll be tweeting from the fresh, new, Twitter account of @CGUKInsidr. News, details, facts, fiction and trivia have already started to pour out from the new account.

Tweet-coverage will continue up to and over the UK Corporate Games weekend from the @CGUKInsidr, as well as the official Twitter account for the UK Corporate Games, namely @CorpGamesUK – both of which will be making full use of the #cguk hashtag where appropriate.

So, if you’re on Twitter, check out the pages.  Alternatively, if there’s something that you would like to know, simply tweet the ‘insidr’ and await a speedy and (hopefully) informative response!

Coventry Awarded 2013 UK Corporate Games

We are delighted to announce that the UK Corporate Games 2013 has been awarded to the City of Coventry.

Coventry, which is the UK’s 11th largest City overcame stiff competition from all corners of the Country to be named the prestigeous destination for Europe’s largest Corporate Multisport festival.  The City boasts some exceptional facilities, with the iconic Jaguar Exhibition Hall at the Ricoh Arena already being named as the magnificent setting for the Games SuperCentre.

Games Director, Ben Sedgemore commented ” we were very lucky to receive a number of impressive bids to stage the Games and it was a very difficult decision in the end.  That said, Coventry has some amazing attributes that will be unknown to many people.  The Bid evaluation team were blown away by the quality of facilities and infrastructure in Coventry, the impeccable sports and celebration venues at the University of Warwick as well as the enthusiasm of the partners.  These combined attributes, the quality of hotels, the transport network and the central location made it an unbeatable combination this year.

Martin Reeves, CEO of Coventry City Council gave us a picture of the ambitious redevelopment plans that they have for the City and we were all very impressed with his drive and determination.  In addition, it was clear that Alan Robinson, Director of Training and Conferences at the University of Warwick immediately recognised the immense potential inherent within the Games having witnessed the 2011 version at Loughborough University.

We all know that the Games can offer unlimited opportunities for everyone as well as providing a massive economic boost to the region and we are delighted to be working with these partners to create a truly amazing event in July 2013.”

The UK Corporate Games Coventry 2013 will take place from the 4th – 7th July and it already looks set to be a groundbreaking event.  Further details will be announced via the blog and Games gossip in the coming months but for advance enquiries please email

Coventry will be hoping to capitalize on the Games potential in a similar way to the current UK Corporate Games host, Preston.

Fot those that don’t know, the Games in Preston coincides with the City’s 800th Guild year celebrations and is also aligned with the City’s status as European City of Sport.  Doug White, Marketing Manager at the Games commented ” We have been delighted with the welcome that we have received from the City of Preston.  Businesses, Individuals and sports enthusiasts are all flocking to seize the unlimited opportunities that the Games creates and we know that each and every one of them will enjoy an unforgettable weekend.  Preston has plenty to be proud of and we can’t wait for July!  Preston City Council understood the Power of the Games from the outset and we are working very hard with them to maximise every potential opportunity.  The Games will be a focal point of their Guild Year celebrations and thousands of people have already signed up to participate.”

So there you have it, if you have not done so already, start planning for two spectacular events in July…

Jaguar Land Rover Motor into the Games as they Celebrate 50 Years

Whether you are a lover of the big and bold Range Rover Evoque, or a die-hard fan of the smooth and sleek Jaguar XF – everyone will agree that Jaguar Land Rover is a company continuing to build on its proud heritage as a manufacturer of British motors.

The UK Corporate Games would like to welcome Jaguar Land Rover back onto the track as our Official Vehicle Provider for the 19th UK Corporate Games.

Jaguar Land Rover are in fact celebrating 50 years of operation at its Halewood plant, located just outside Liverpool, a mere stone’s throw away Preston, the home of Europe’s largest corporate multi sport festival for 2012.  Staff at the Jaguar Land Rover Halewood plant are limbering up for what’s guaranteed to be a fantastic weekend of sport, business and tourism.  Some are even looking to defend sporting titles that were secured at the last Games staged in the North-West of England, the UK Corporate Games Liverpool 2010.

Over 60 Years On and Still Going Strong
The Halewood Plant has got every reason to celebrate!  The first Land Rover made its debut in 1948. It was designed with brilliant simplicity for extraordinary ability and unrivalled strength and durability. In fact, six decades on it is estimated that two-thirds of all these incredible vehicles are still at work – many of them in some of the most extreme conditions and inhospitable places on earth.

Learn more about the History and Heritage of the Land Rover.

Over 50 years later…this culture of innovation has continued to develop with both Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles featuring new models, more refinement, more innovative technology, more efficiency and fewer emissions. Though the Brand is incredibly strong it is never complacent, as demonstrated by it’s continued attempts to improve with initiatives such as e_Terrain Technologies (which improves the environmental performance of vehicles by reducing CO2 emissions), Sustainable Manufacturing and CO2 Offsetting. Land Rover will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of advanced design – keeping it at the cutting edge of technology and engineering.  This drive, determination and powerful relationship with the Sport, Business and Tourism market clearly make Jaguar Land Rover an ideal partner for the Corporate Games.

From humble beginnings:  LRX Concept and ‘Huey,’ the First Production Land Rover From 1948, at Solihull Facility in England.

The UK Corporate Games would like to welcome Jaguar Land Rover – Halewood Plant to the Worldwide Corporate Sports Community!

Barton Grange Hotel Unveiled as Official Headquarters Hotel

Barton Grange Hotel

The 4-star Barton Grange, one of Preston’s most prestigious hotels and best-kept secret, is proud to announce its involvement with the UK Corporate Games as the Official Headquarters Hotel.

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, your stay at The Barton Grange Hotel will certainly be memorable. Guests return again and again to this family run hotel, drawn by an irresistible blend of warmth, professionalism, humour and first-rate service. Recent refurbishments have created a stylish, contemporary look for the Hotel which nevertheless retains all the traditional charm of the original manor house. Bedrooms are beautifully decorated with superb bathrooms.

Built in 1900 as a country residence, the hotel has a distinguished history and offers its guests a stylish yet contemporary alternative to traditional hotel accommodation. In 1940 the house was requisitioned by the War Office as a mess for officers of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. In 1951 it opened as a Bed and Breakfast with only 6 bedrooms, but after several additions and refurbishments as a result of its popularity, it stands proud with 51 bedrooms, a leisure centre, conference and banqueting facilities for up to 300 people and its own unique bistro.

Perhaps the most enchanting part of the hotel however is its Walled Garden Bistro.  A firm favourite amongst the Games staff in our office, the Walled Garden Bistro has been faithfully recreated from plans dating back to 1901 and its mellow brick walls make it a very relaxing place to eat and drink after a hard day of sport.

The Games staff are delighted to welcome the Barton Grange Hotel as their Official Hotel.  We are delighted to add that the team at the hotel also plan to enter this year’s Games – so watch out for them across the Games weekend!

The Barton Grange hotel is just minutes from the M6 and with masses of free parking, getting there is easy and hassle free.

Did You Know…?
Shortly after the Barton Grange Hotel first opened in 1951, its proprietor and grounds man  started a Landscaping company, which grew to become an established wholesale plant growing division and garden centre, located in the hotel grounds.  Much later in 2008, the gardening business outgrew its site and moved 2 miles down the road into the village of Brock, now occupying a 50 acre site, including a farm shop and narrow boat marina as well as Willows Restaurant and The Riverside Café.
If ever a garden centre had the ‘wow factor’, then the gorgeous Barton Grange Garden Centre is it!

A multisports festival with 4 days of activities and celebrations and 22 sports on the programme, Preston will be overwhelmed with the buzz of over 4,000 athletes taking part in the Games.

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is set to be the hub of the Games sporting activities and has been recognised as our Official Venue Provider for the weekend event.

UCLan and the Corporate Games

UCLan is fast-growing in the area of sports science – and it has the facilities to boot!  Set less than 2 miles apart from one another, their indoor and outdoor facilities are nothing short of outstanding, making it the perfect setting for our Games.

The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre is UCLan’s new purpose built, state of the art indoor sports facility on the main University campus.  The four floors provide outstanding facilities for a wide variety of sporting needs, including:
2 Sports Halls, Squash Court, Bleacher Seating for 300 Spectators, 2 Purpose Built Studios which house a variety of dance, martial arts and fitness classes and an air-conditioned Fitness Suite.

Down the road, £12million UCLan Sports Arena provides facilities for Athletics (8 lane track), Rugby League, Rugby Union, Football (5 grass pitches) Hockey (2 floodlit all weather pitches) Netball and Tennis (4 floodlit courts) and Cycling (1.5 km circuit). The Arena also has 7 floodlit training grids an indoor room for activities, theory sessions and fitness training.  A new 18-station fitness suite also opened in May 2001.

During the Games weekend, over a third of the 22 sports will take place between these two sites alone.

View our Preston Venue Map for locations of our sports.

Venue Specifications will shortly be available via the Corporate Games website.

Not stopping there, our Games Party location is set to be hosted at UCLan Students’ Union £6.5 million prestige venue 53°, a 2,500+ capacity venue.

PNE FC Score As Silver Champions for UK Games in July

Preston North End Football Club have transferred from the Championship to the UK Corporate Games!

The club are the latest addition to our ever-growing group of Preston Champions – true supporters of the Preston Games.  As Silver Champions, the club will be putting their sporting prowess to good use and will be entering over 50 athletes across the 4-day, 22 sport festival.  In addition to this, the club will have access to all the major events and celebrations across the weekend, to promote PNE and the City to local and visiting corporates.

Club History

In the past Preston were famously successful, being the first winners of The Double in English football. In 1888 – 89, Preston became the only team to go throughout an entire season unbeaten in both the league and FA Cup – also with the record of never conceding a goal in the FA Cup.

Without a doubt, Preston’s greatest player is arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time and a local lad Sir Tom Finney.  Finney is regarded as one of the best of his era and scored 30 international goals in his time.  Dubbed the "Preston Plumber" due to Finney actually being a plumber, he remained Preston’s most recent full England international until David Nugent who scored on his only international appearance against Andorra.

Bobby Charlton, an England World Cup winner from 1966, was also appointed Preston manager in 1973.

The club stadium is located in Deepdale and was first built in 1860, although it has undergone several redevelopments, growth and regeneration since then.  It is claimed to be the longest continuously used football ground in the world, with 135 years of games history on its well-used pitch.  The stadium itself holds 23,408 – and it is a fantastic venue.
